A concern was raised regarding the privacy practices of the State’s BallotTrax program which allows Utah voters to sign up to receive alerts when their ballot is received and processed. To participate in the program a voter must provide BallotTrax with their name, date of birth, and zip code. The State also provides BallotTrax with voter data. A review of the program found that the contract between the State and the company which operates BallotTrax requires BallotTrax to protect and safeguard voter data. The contract also limits BallotTrax’ use and disclosure of voter data. The governmental entity that oversees the BallotTrax program confirmed that the terms and conditions included in the contract apply to both the personal data supplied by a voter and the voter data provided by the State. Thus, it was determined that the State has taken appropriate measures to protect personal data of Utah voters.
